มีคำถามเข้ามาว่าเราควรวาง LUTs ไว้ตรงไหนดี หน้าสุด หลังสุด หรือตรงกลางระหว่าง balance grade กับ creative grade
ในที่นี้จะขอพูดเฉพาะวางไว้หน้าสุดและหลังสุด เนื่องจากไม่มีประสบการณ์การใช้งาน LUT ระหว่างเกรดและไม่เคยใช้ LUTs หลายชิ้นในชอตเดียวกัน
There were some questions about where should we put the LUTs on in our procedure. Before the grade? After the grade or in between the balance grade and creative grade?
I will share with you just only before and after the grade due to I have no experiences of using the LUTs in the middle of the grade using many LUTs in the same shot.
วาง LUTs ไว้หน้าสุด
ข้อดี
เกรดสีได้ง่าย เนื่องจากน้ำหนักภาพหลัง LUTs เป็นลีเนียร์แล้ว สีตรง น้ำหนักภาพตรงกันกับที่ตาเห็น
เห็นสีที่จะใช้ในการคีย์ได้ง่ายขึ้น เนื่องจากสีที่เลือกใช้จะตรงตาเห็น
ข้อเสีย
ถ้าภาพมีส่วนสว่างจ้ามาก หรือเงา ส่วนมืดมากๆ บางทีการเกรดสีหลัง LUTs ก็อาจจะทำให้เราไม่สามารถเรียกรายละเอียดของภาพในส่วนที่สว่างมากหรือมืดมากกลับมากได้
เมื่อภาพมีส่วนสว่างมาก หรือมืดมากในภาพ การลดคอนทราสต์เพื่อให้ภาพกลับมาดูสวยจะทำได้ยากขึ้น
LUTs before the grade
Good things:
Easy to do the colour grading because the images after the LUTs are linear, so, what you see is what you get.
Easy to use a secondary key due to colour and contrast are correct with what we see.
Notice:
With the very bright or dark images, sometimes colour grading after the LUTs may not able to bring back some details from the brighter or darker side enough.
With the very bright or very dark images, we may cannot control contrast as good as we need.
จะเห็นได้ว่าส่วนยอดของพาเหรดสโคปได้ถูกตัดไป นั่นหมายความว่ารายละเอียดบางส่วนของภาพได้หายไปแล้วเนื่องจาก LUT
We will see the top level of the parade scope that was clipped by LUT already. Some details in that areas may lost already.

ข้อดี
สามารถกำหนดน้ำหนักภาพได้มากกว่า เนื่องจากยังมีเนื้อภาพที่ยังไม่ถูก LUTs ตัดทอนรายละเอียดของภาพออกไป ทำให้เราลดความสว่าง หรือดึงส่วนมืดขึ้นได้มากกว่า
ในกรณีที่มีเกรนเยอะ การดึงส่วนมืดขึ้น หรือลดสว่างลง อาจจะเพิ่มเกรนหรือลดเกรนตามที่ถ่ายมา
ช่วงสีของไฟล์ log กว้างกว่า ทำให้เราทำงานกับแสงและสีได้มากกว่า แต่ก็อาจจะเป็นการเพิ่มงานขึ้นมาอีกนิดหน่อย
ข้อเสีย
การกำหนดน้ำหนักภาพจะทำได้ยากกว่า เนื่องจากไฟล์ภาพส่วนใหญ่ที่ต้องการใช้ LUTs จะเป็น log files การวางน้ำหนักแสงและสีของภาพจึงอยู่บนพื้นฐานของการเกรด log files
เนื่องจากการบิดสีของ LUTs ที่ท้ายสุดของโนด ทำให้การบาลานซ์และการคีย์สีอาจจะไม่ใช่อย่างที่ตาเห็น ทำให้สับสนเล็กน้อยได้
LUTs after the grade
Good things:
We are able to control the contrast and brightness things more than the before LUTs process because there are some details still inside the images that not clipped by the LUTs.
Some parts of colour and contrast from the original images and the LUTs may be different, so, we may confuse to select the area of colour and light sometimes.
จะเห็นได้ว่าที่ยอดของพาเหรดสโคปจะมีรายละเอียดเล็กๆ น้อยๆ ที่สามารถดึงกลับมาได้ เนื่องจากเราใช้วิธีการเกรดสีจากภาพต้นฉบับ ทำให้สามารถควบคุมน้ำหนักสีได้ดีกว่า
We will see some more details on the top level of the parade scope. That's because we are grading directly on the original footage, so, nothing clipped before grading.
ข้อสำคัญที่ต้องคำนึงถึงในการใช้ LUT ก็คือ เครื่องมือชนิดนี้ทำงานคล้ายๆ ฟิลเตอร์อย่างนึง ซึ่งอาจจะมีผลต่อคุณภาพของภาพ หากมีการใช้ไม่ถูกต้องกับเนื้องานหรือใช้ในชอตเดียวกันหลายตัวเกินไป
ทั้งนี้ ขึ้นอยู่กับความถนัดและการประยุกต์การใช้งานในคัลเลอร์ลิสต์แต่ละคนด้วย ใครมีข้อดี ข้อเสียเรื่องการใช้ LUTs ที่นอกเหนือจากนี้ เรามาแบ่งปันความรู้กันนะคะ
One more thing to concern is "LUT" are some kind of filters that may lost some generation of the footage which affect the quality of the images. So, we should be careful of using it or not using too many of it in the same shot.
There is nothing really good or bad about this. It's up to the skills of the colourist of how to locate it and control it. If there is any more or different opinions, please share, I love to discuss about it.
